Guest -> 15 year old starting weights. (8/30/2006 5:08:39 AM)

Hi, i'm new to this forum, and new to weight lifting. I'm 15 years old and want to build a bit of bulk and stength in my arms.

I recently got a 20kg dumbell set, but am planning on getting some more weight to add to it as I have been told that to build stength and bulk I am ment to do a medium weight with medium repetitions.

So I'm doing 8 reps on 10kgs, then I go to the next level and get about 5-6 reps on 13kgs then back to 10kgs and get about 6-7.

Is this going to effect my growth? And do you have any recomendations on build a bit of bulk and stength in my arms using dumbells.

Thanks

here is what i do for my biceps. i started with 15 pounds, and did 17 reps. and i waited til i got to 25 reps, and uped 5 pounds. then started over, til i got to 25 reps again. at that point, i added 5 more ponds. you're talking kgs though. im in america, and we do pounds, which i cant translate into kgs as i didnt pay attention in math class when i was in the 6th grade. btu if you know about what it should translate to, id do that. cuz ive been growin pretty quick like that.

You are too young to start proper weight training, you should wait until you have stopped growing before you start before you start any kind of body building.

You Are Absolutely wrong 15 is an ideal age to lift

I'm 15 too and I have been doing it for about 4 months (it was around my 15th birthday). This won't stunt growth right?

If it does, will drinking a lot of milk and having extra calcium combat this?

I don't think its a good idea to start at a young age. the ideal age would be when your around 17-18..mainly depending on the type of person and body type.

if your to young, your bones haven't developed fully and it will compress the bones when doing weights...or too heavy weights.
Milk (calcium) does help in threatening bones but it must be used in conjunction with brains. No point taking all the calcium in, and not waiting for your bones to fully develop (strengthen) and damaging your body.
